Trumpeter Russell Gunn's latest release, Russell Gunn Plays Miles, is a tribute to the iconic trumpeter Miles Davis, the latter being well known for unapologetically moving in new directions. Similarly, Gunn, one of today's most innovative artists, unabashedly tackles, successfully, some of Davis's more popular tunes. Arguably, there are some artists whose work should be left to posterity, revered and studied. However, Gunn's handling of Davis tracks is exceptionally executed. Arguably, Gunn's approach is indicative of what Davis did as he began to carve out yet another musical direction.
Any track on this disc is likely to energize listeners and, perhaps, have us ponder, "I wonder what Miles would be playing if he were alive." Gunn's versions of Footprints, Tutu, and Blue In Green are fantastic renditions of Davis's work, each work offering a fresh perspective on Miles's legacy. As well, the oh-so-funky bass line introductions on All Blues and Eighty One are worth the price of admission! Gunn's soft, perfectly timed notes are reminiscent Miles' precise notes, yet Gunn also captures the energy Miles demonstrated in live performances.
Some may argue that Gunn's release is "too electrified" or "commercial." However, if one listens to this disc remembering where Davis left off and was headed, one will clearly hear a fresh, upbeat, and wonderfully executed production. Gunn deserves commendation for reminding us of Davis's far-reaching musical appeal and social significance as an artist, composer, and trendsetter.
