Shades of Jade CD coverBassist Marc Johnson’s return to the recording studio as bandleader has been greatly anticipated by many of his fans even though his initial recordings with ECM began in the mid -1980’s. Fortunately, Johnson’s return as a leader is nothing short of stellar, and his latest release, Shades of Jade
, should soothe fans’ palettes for quite some time. Shades of Jade, is yet another example of ECM’s penchant for creating melodic, ethereal sessions. Co-produced by pianist Eliane Elias, this release has all the musical equivalents of an eclectic, fun-filled day in Central Park: crisp, airy melodies (Apareceu), swift blues-based funky tones (Raise), and pensive lines (Shades of Jade).

One of the most serene, harmonically astute tracks is Snow. Elias has always excelled at soft tones and soothing rhythms, and she does not disappoint here. The sheer beauty of this track lay in its trio format and fierce interaction between Elias, Joey Baron’s (drums) intermittent accessories, and Johnson’s mellifluous lines. Analogously, Snow is a simmering volcano, initially harmless, but increasingly anxious. The tension and intensity grow as the tune progresses, largely the result of Johnson’s progressive tempo and Baron’s occasional “bombs”. But, it is Johnson’s final solo that fends off a tectonic eruption, bringing the track to its serene conclusion.

Raise, appropriately titled, distinguishes itself from most of the tunes because of guitarist John Scofield’s bluesy notes and organist Allain Mallet’s gospel-laden harmonies. Together, they are reminiscent of classic duals between Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith, masters of artistically blending blues and jazz with the pulpit. Saxophonist Joe Lovano’s wailing accoutrements serve as a major voice of the choir, akin to the soulfoul renditions of the late Stanley Turrentine. Similarly, Blue Nefertiti offers a smooth walking blues pattern where, yet again, Elias shines brightly. If the track Shades of Jade is the equivalent of a day in Central Park, Raise is its Baptist church counterpart.

Shades of Jade is a compilation of excellently crafted compositions and myriad textures, thanks to Elias and Johnson. For Johnson’s fans, this is the proverbial “must have.” But, for listeners who appreciate outstanding musicianship, well-conceived arrangements, emotion-laden ballads, and plain ol’ good music, you, too, need to get this gem.
